The bright neon lights of the MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit are a sight for any visitor to behold. First opened in 1999, the MotorCity Casino is one of just three casinos operated outside of tribal land in the state. It is mostly new construction that also incorporates an old Wonder Bread company building.

Visitors will find more than 2,800 slot machines and over 59 table games when they arrive on the 100,000+ sq. ft. casino floor. As of 2020, visitors to Motor City will also find a FanDuel retail sportsbook located right inside the casino. MotorCity is also partnered with FanDuel to operate its online gambling sites, which officially launched on January 22, 2021.

MotorCity also offers a theater arena with seating for 2,400 people and a 400-room luxury hotel and spa. For meals and snacks, you can drop in at a four-star restaurant, visit the food court, or relax in one of several bars and lounges.

In December 2019, Michigan’s Governor signed legislation to legalize online gambling, online sports betting, daily fantasy sports, and retail sports betting. MotorCity Casino History

The original historic building where the MotorCity Casino Hotel complex is located was first built in 1915. Part of the exterior terracotta relief was restored during renovations. The Mandalay Resort Group opened the casino on this site in 1999.

MGM Mirage acquired Mandalay Resort Group in 2005. At the time, MGM also owned the MGM Grand Detroit. Since Michigan law only allows companies to own one casino in the state, MGM had to sell one of their properties. After a bit of hemming and hawing, they wound up selling their share in MotorCity Casino to Little Caesar’s owner, Marian Ilitch.

Ilitch also invested in a $300 million expansion of the casino to include the 400-room hotel and spa. In 2008, the MotorCity Casino received its signature metal wrap from Quality Metalcraft, which produced 11,000 tons of stainless steel ribbon for the project.

The casino’s design is strongly influenced by Detroit’s automotive and industrial history, hence the name, MotorCity Casino Hotel. Outside, the building has a unique curved design that is wrapped in a metal shell. Inside, there are thousands of slot machines and dozens of gaming tables with roulette, Black Jack, poker, craps, Pai Gow, Baccarat, Casino War, and Spanish 21.

Visitors will also find one of the few AAA 4-Diamond Restaurants in Detroit. It’s on the 16th floor of the casino with a menu of modern American cuisine.
