The opening of the Kewadin Casino, Hotel, and Convention Center was approved by the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians Board of Directors in 1984. The popularity of Kewadin Casino, Hotel, and Convention Center was the reason for moving from one casino to several and the tribe gaining ownership of other non-gaming enterprises. By 2005, the businesses employed almost 2,000 people, making the tribe the largest employer in the Upper Peninsula.
An anonymous tip in Jun 2011 led to two arrests by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribal Police after individuals were seen using a device to manipulate the gaming machines to get a higher payout. The investigation that followed between the Tribal Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) found that six people have been working together and traveled to the casino on more than 50 weekends between June 2009 and June 2001 to steal more than $300,000 from the casino.
