Head Coach Jim Harbaugh has some work to do to turn this season’s squad into a contender. While he has seven starters returning on the offensive side of the ball, the defense, which has three returning starters, will need to be rebuilt almost from scratch.
Big Ten Championship Odds 2024
Here are the Big Ten Championship odds for the 2024 college football season at BetRivers:
- Ohio State -230
- Michigan +1000
- Penn State +1200
- Wisconsin +1600
- Nebraska +1600
- Minnesota +1800
- Iowa +1800
- Michigan State +2700
- Purdue +3300
- Indiana +4000
- Maryland +10000
- Northwestern +20000
- Illinois +25000
- Rutgers +25000
Ohio State is favored to regain its perch on top of the Big Ten, followed by many of the usual contenders in Penn State, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Nebraska’s odds are surprising, considering the Huskers were 1-8 in conference play last year (3-9 overall).
Iowa returns 17 starters from last season’s top-25 team. However, if the Hawkeyes can’t get more production from the offensive side of the ball (121st in total offense; 99th in scoring), they will have a hard time winning their first outright conference title since 1985. They were co-champs in 1990, 2002, and 2004.
The Buckeyes have a solid nucleus of 13 starters coming back, including Heisman-hopeful C.J. Stroud at quarterback. He’ll have to find some new targets, though, since Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave have taken their talents to the NFL. But returning receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba was Stroud’s favorite target last season. He had 95 receptions for 1,606 yards and nine touchdowns.
A surprising threat could emerge in Maryland. The Terrapins’ offense gets its entire line back along with quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa. While Tagovailoa was wildly inconsistent in 2020, he settled down last season and had Maryland’s passing offense clicking most weeks (No. 13 in the country).
However, their defense struggled against the better teams in the conference. While it returns seven starters, all seven will need to step their game up for Maryland to have a shot to win its first Big Ten championship.

Michigan, Michigan State Could Be Competitive
The Wolverines are in good shape on the offensive side of the ball with seven returning starters. They did lose two starters off the offensive line but plugged one of those holes with help from the transfer portal with Virginia transfer Victor Oluwatimi. But whether Michigan can defend its conference title will depend on the defensive side of the ball.
With three returning starters and many of the most productive players from last season moving on to the NFL, the defense will need a rebuild in 2024.
For Michigan State, the defense could become one of the better units in the Big Ten with nine starters coming back. However, the group ranked 10th in the conference in points allowed, so the unit still has some work to do. The offense may have even more work to do. The unit gets quarterback Payton Thorne back, but it needs to find three offensive linemen and a running back.
Michigan and Michigan State have some work to do, but if they can plug a few critical holes on their rosters, they could give Ohio State a run for its money in the Big Ten.
