Week 1 Canadian Football Matchups
The CFL has nine teams divided into two divisions: four teams in the East Division and five teams in the West Division. The teams play a 21-week season, with 18 games per team. Following the season, the playoff teams compete for the Grey Cup.
Winnipeg, which won last season’s championship, is listed as the favorite to win the Grey Cup, at +325 at BetRivers.
The first game of the 2024 season was played Thursday night with Calgary defeating Montreal, 30-27.
Ottawa Redblacks at Winnipeg Blue Bombers
These teams kick off the season Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET. The Blue Bombers (-9.5) had the best record in the CFL last season and won the Grey Cup. Their offense was ranked second. Ottawa’s defense in 2021 led the CFL in scoring off turnovers.
While Winnipeg is favored by nearly double digits, the total is set at 47.5 points and is juiced to the over.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Saskatchewan Rough Riders
Both of these teams made the playoffs last season only to lose to the Blue Bombers. In Hamilton’s case, that loss came in the Grey Cup for the second consecutive season. Both teams return a majority of their players this season and are expected once again to be among the league’s strongest teams. The Rough Riders are favored by 2.5 points. The kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, June 11, at 7 p.m. ET.
Edmonton Elks at British Columbia Lions
A big crowd is expected at BC Place for the Week 1 finale (Saturday, June 11, 10 p.m. ET) in which the home-standing Lions are favored by 3.5 points. BC had the best passing game in the league last season behind QB Michael Reilly, but he retired so the Lions have turned to Nathan Rourke to take the snaps.
The Elks went 3-11 last season to tie Ottawa for the worst record in the league.
