Online Gambling At Island Resort & Casino

As of October 2011, Island Resort & Casino partnered with Aristocrat Technologies for a “play for fun” form of online tribal gaming.

In July 2020, Island Resort announced a partnership with BetAmerica to launch retail and online sports betting as well as online gambling for real money. This change was a direct result of the gambling legislation passed in 2019. The BetAmerica retail sportsbook officially opened its doors at Island Resort in September 2020.

BetAmerica then rebranded to TwinSpires at the retail location. When online gambling went live, both TwinSpires Sportsbook and TwinSpires Online Casino launched along with the first wave of online gambling apps in Michigan.

In February 2024, Churchill Downs Incorporated – TwinSpires’ parent company – shut down the operator’s sports betting and casino operations across the US, including at Island Resort Casino in Michigan. This means that a new spot will open in the industry in Michigan.

Island Resort & Casino History

Looking back on the casino history, the Island Resort & Casino got its start in 1981 when car bingo started as a way to raise money for uniforms for the reservation baseball team. Four years after that, the Hannahville Bingo and Casino opened but was renamed as Chip-In Casino in 1987. One year later, a convention center was opened. In 2007, an 11-story hotel was added to the property, while an 18-hole championship golf course came along one year later.

Island Casino Hotel & Amenities

Eventually, the casino became known as the Island Resort & Casino. It is the largest casino in the area, located in Harris, Michigan. It’s less than an hour’s drive away from Marquette while being around a two-hour drive from Green Bay, Wisconsin. The hotel at the casino has 320 guest rooms with large-screen televisions, sitting areas, and cable, while the suites have amenities like kitchenettes and whirlpool tubs.

As of January 2020, the casino received approval from the Tribal Council for a $30 million expansion. The expansion will include over 100 extra hotel rooms to connect with the existing hotel, three guest elevators, and a lobby. An upscale dining establishment and convention space are also planned during the expansion.

Construction was expected to start in June 2020, and the expansion will be complete at some point in 2021.
